Cystic Fibrosis Home > Pertzye Dosage
Available as a delayed-release capsule, Pertzye is taken with each meal and snack. Your exact dosage of Pertzye will be based on your weight, your diet, and how you respond to the medication, among other factors. If you have difficulty swallowing capsules, you can pour the contents on applesauce or some other slightly acidic food.
The dose of Pertzye® (pancrelipase) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on the following factors:
- Your diet (especially how much fat you eat)
- Your age and weight
- How you respond to the medication.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
It should be noted that pancrelipase products, including Pertzye, are typically dosed based on lipase content, although they contain lipases, amylases, and proteases.
For children age 12 months to 4 years old, the standard starting dose is based on weight, usually 1,000 units (based on lipase content) per kg of body weight per meal (about 455 units per lb, per meal).
For children age 4 years and older, the starting dosage is 500 units (based on lipase content) per kg of body weight, per meal (about 228 units of lipase per lb per meal), with half the normal mealtime amount used for snacks.
In all cases, your child's healthcare provider may adjust the dose as necessary. Alternatively, dosing based on fat consumption rather than body weight may also be used.
The standard adult dosage for Pertzye varies, depending on the severity of pancreatic enzyme deficiency symptoms, weight, and previous response to similar medications. A reasonable starting amount is 500 units (based on lipase content) per kg of body weight, per meal (about 227 units of lipase per lb per meal).
Your healthcare provider can increase this amount as needed. Typically, half the normal mealtime dose is used for snacks. Alternatively, dosing based on fat consumption rather than body weight may also be used.
