Regardless of your age or weight, the Cayston dosage is standard for everyone. The instructions call for mixing one single-use vial of Cayston with one 1-mL ampule of saline three times a day. This liquid is then poured into a nebulizer where it turns into a fine mist and is inhaled into the lungs. You will follow these steps for 28 days, followed by a 28-day break.
There is only one standard recommended dose of Cayston® (aztreonam for inhalation solution), regardless of your age or weight. As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
The usual recommended dose of Cayston is one single-use vial (75 mg) mixed with one 1-mL ampule of saline three times a day. The medication is normally taken for 28 days, followed by a 28-day break when no Cayston is used. This cycle of 28 days using the drug followed by 28 days off the drug should be repeated until your healthcare provider tells you otherwise.
Cayston is inhaled using a nebulizer. A nebulizer is a machine that takes a small amount of liquid and turns it into a fine mist that can be inhaled into the lungs. Cayston must be diluted with 1 mL of sterile diluent (saline) immediately prior to pouring it into the nebulizer. You will receive the saline in single-use ampules along with your medicine.
It is recommended that a bronchodilator be used before each Cayston dosage. Bronchodilators are inhaled medicines that help open up the airways. If you are using a short-acting bronchodilator, it should be used between 15 minutes and 4 hours before Cayston. Long-acting bronchodilators can be taken between 30 minutes and 12 hours before using Cayston.
If you are taking other medicines or treatments to help with your cystic fibrosis, it is recommended that you take them in this order:
- Bronchodilators first
- Medicines that help clear mucus from your lungs (mucolytics) next
- Cayston last.
